An der Hülben, named in 1909 after the old field name Auf der Hülben. Hülben referred to water-filled depressions or ponds (also Hulben or Hülm). In the Middle Ages, the Church of St. James auf der Hülben stood in the vicinity of such a pond. The surrounding area also became known as Auf der Hülben, as first documented in a charter from 1367. The name can be traced back to 1374 in the land register. The present-day alley was shown on the Vasquez city map around 1830 and on a city map around 1900 as part of Jakobergasse; until the demolition of the city wall, it was the last alley before the wall.
