Amundsenstraße
1140 Penzing, 1170 Hernals
Amundsenstraße (Hadersdorf, Hütteldorf, Dornbach, Neuwaldegg), named in 1930 after the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen (1872–1928); he is by far the most successful explorer in the Arctic and Antarctic. He was the first to traverse the Northwest Passage and, after Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, the Northeast Passage. In 1911, he and four companions were the first to reach the South Pole. Since neither Robert Peary nor Frederick Cook nor Richard Byrd could clearly assert their claim to fame, it is likely that Amundsen, along with 15 other expedition members, was also the first to reach the North Pole during his flight in the airship “Norge” in 1926. The street was previously called Franz-Karl-Straße, and until 1930, Cranachstraße.
This street is special to me as I was accompanied by the person I had been dating for a few months at this point and it was the first time we did something else than just "hanging out" (which I love, by the way). We went there on January 26th 2025 and despite the depressing winter weather, we had a lot of fun, especially as he was pointing out so many things to me I might have overlooked. I cherish the fact that he sees the world similarly to myself.
