Amstergasse (Atzgersdorf) named in 1967 after the businessman Samuel Amster (1868-1942).

Samuel Amster was born on June 15, 1868, in Dobromyl, Galicia, and was an Austrian businessman who ran a furniture store and a moneylending business in Vienna. In the then suburbs of Atzgersdorf and Liesing, he was known as a generous and compassionate benefactor, offering lenient repayment terms or deferrals to customers in financial hardship or unemployment.

Together with his wife, Ettel Amster, born in 1867 in Jarosław, he was deported to Riga on February 6, 1942, under the Nazi racial laws and murdered there later that year. Their last known address was Novaragasse 13 in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district. The couple’s only son managed to escape to England.

The weather was gorgeous on November 1st 2024 when I visited "Amstergasse" and I was in a good mood. The street is right across from "Alma-König-Weg" where I last was in 2021 with my ex-girlfriend (we weren't even together yet then). Coming back to areas I've been before always comes with a lot of memories attached. In this case, only positive ones.
