Abt-Karl-Gasse was named in 1887 after the Benedictine Alexander Karl (1824-1909), abbot of monastery Melk, member of the liberal constitutional party of the hall (from 1876), member of the Lower Austrian parliament (1878-1908). He was priorily responsible for the economic concerns of the city and monastery of Melk and arranged the construction of a larger gymnasium through adding a convict building.

The street was originally named Untere Quergasse and from 1864 to 1887 Karlsgasse.

I visited Abt-Karl-Gasse on January 15th 2017. It was super cold, but I enjoyed taking the photos.
